Foreword

When a 50-year old starts filming, what to expect?

In the spring of 1995 the year I was 50, I decided to aquire something I had wanted for many years, a video camera and bought a Sony Handycam, with the latest Hi8 technology. I was told that it equalled the quality that was used by NRK, the National Broadcasting of Norway, so opting for quality, I paid handsomely for it. I lived at Varden 193, a housing area in the northern part of Romsa island, and had a tenant, Ánde or Anders Henriksen, a distant relative, who was a student at the university. At the time his aunt Máret also lived in my spacious flat, so naturally they figure in my first takings, along with my two aunts Pus Solberg and Sigrid Solberg Karlsen, both since deceased.

Although I am a professional artist, I squarely state that I am far from a professional film-maker, on the contratry! The mark of amateurism is clear throughout, and still is, I believe. My main difficulty is the fast pace and the shaky handwork, which scars an otherwise interesting concept or topic. Nevertheless, I would claim that my first viedofilm was sligthly better than that of Johs Kalvemo, the famous Sámi TV reporter, as shown in 1974, it was fast and very shaky, and the sequences very short, and it proved great entertainment. In fact that was a good cue for me to try to do better, but again I have to say that my main focus, perhaps regrettably so, was not of perfection, but mere documentation. As you probably know by now, I have an obseesion for documenting my activities, and this is a part of it. After I have documented, and digitized these films[1], I will go on to document and digitize all my Musicasette-tapes, with some very interresting interviews on them. My main insentive being, if I don’t do it, nobody else will.

So, then, here is an overview of the films I have made. The first years on the Hi8 camera. Alas, Hi8 players are since many years obsolete, and luckily I got Truls Melbye Tiller at Tromsprodukt to digitize all the films on DVDs, and they document my cinematic activities from 1995 to 2000. Included is also a copy of a film made by Rosella Ragazzi at the opening of my art exhibition in 2008 at Galleri Brevik in Romsa/Tromsø.

The following years are films made by a smaller digital video camera, and also films made by photographic cameras, mostly short glimpses from nature, mostly at lake Báhpajávri (Prestevannet) on Romsa Island, as well as everyday life, and visits abroad, etc. I will make separate lists for both, they are just mentioned here. So the present list include only the Hi8 transfers to digital DVD[2].

The main reason for my not taking a more professional approach to the technical side of filmmaking, is lack of time and capacity. This is unedited footage, pure raw material. However, I hope that at least some glimpses are of such value that my work has not been in vain. Most important of these are my interviews with my aunt Anna Persen, neé Mathisen, Kathrine Johnsen, Liva Andreassen, Elly Johnsen Novvale, my foster-aunt Sigrid Solberg Karlsen and neighbour Harald Henriken all of whom are now gone, and other interesting persons still alive, like Ragnar Wiesener, Lars Walkeapää, Ole Omma, my foster-mother Nikoline Solberg Hansen, and others. So I leave it to posterity, if ever there will be one, to judge the technical level and my use of time…

[1] I started out very optimistically, and documented the times of day and even the second each film sequence started and ended. When I had thus documented the first day of filming, May 31st 1995, I soon realized that I would have to spend an enormous amount of time just for that task alone, so I quickly resolved to skip these details and will in the following only document the day of shooting, and register the most necessary information like date, place, persons and occasions/topics and skip the rest, unless of particular interest. If these films prove valuable at all, one still could go back to the original tapes and find out the exact timings, etc. if needed. (09.11.2012)

[2] Alas, my original Hi8 video camera do not replay any more, after several attempts to try to play the destroyed tape KF 023. At time of writing, there are some of the transfers missing, but I hope to correct that later. (29.11.2012)
